The Past Week with Evan Cohen
Friday (July 3): Evan and the show were off for an MLB doubleheader.
Thursday (July 2): Wait, so the Florida Panthers hired Drew Rosenhaus as part of a PR stunt, and he wasn't actually hired by the fans to re-negotiate ticket prices? Evan feels a little duped on this one, and something just seems wrong with the way the Panthers are misleading the public. Meanwhile, mid-show, the Mets went from beating the Pirates (yes!) to blowing the lead (no!) to finally winning in extra innings (good enough!). In the middle of all of that, Evan wonders, Is this what it's like to be a Clippers fan, to know that something bad is always around the corner? More baseball: It's amazing that there's more buzz nationally than there is locally about the Marlins being a contender for the NL East title. WPTV Newschannel 5 sports anchor Ryan Lieber also joined the show.
Wednesday (July 1): That's it! Enough is enough! Rip apart the Mets, tear the team down, blow it up. The window for this particular Mets team to win has closed. At this point, it's time to start trading away the big names: Get rid of Johan Santana, David Wright, Carlos Beltran -- those guys would bring in a ton of good, young talent. Meanwhile: On the heels of the Marlins win over the Nationals today, starting pitcher Josh Johnson joined the show. Also stopping by: Pro tennis player, former Florida Gator and Boca Raton resident Jesse Levine.
Tuesday (June 30): Evan still can't connect the dots between Denny Green and Bill Parcells. How does Green know enough about Parcells to know that he would have any interest at all in bringing Michael Vick to the Dolphins? Does Green even know that the Dolphins just drafted Pat White? All of that said, Evan says the Dolphins should probably go after Vick if Vick wants to play in Miami. ESPN NFL insider Chris Mortensen joined the show to discuss; New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez also made an appearance. Both Mort and Sanchez stopped by as part of the NFL's rookie symposium being held in Palm Beach Gardens. Meanwhile... How 'bout those Mets?! They're behind the Marlins in the standings and their manager just labeled the team "below average" -- it's a good time to be alive!
Monday (June 29): Evan's TV hosting debut Sunday night was a moderate success, despite his flop sweat and overall nerves over the entire situation. On the positive side, Evan did receive numerous post-show messages showing support from many friends -- except John Martin, who also threw in some criticism. Finally focusing on his radio show, Evan started up with the same lead as he used on TV: When you have to ask the question of whether or not soccer can become a major sport in this country, then you have your answer (no). And isn't it slightly arrogant of us (the USA) to assume that we need to be good at soccer? The US needs (or wants) soccer much more than the soccer world needs the US.
Friday (June 26): Another wild NBA Draft and Shaq stole the thunder from the whole thing. But, beyond that: Blake Griffin is a total can't-miss and, according to Evan, a "possible Hall of Famer"; things got interesting at #3 when an extremely smart GM took James Harden (a player who Evan thinks is garbage); Evan has no idea what the T'Wolves are doing with about 30 guards; what is Larry Bird doing drafting Tyler Hansbrough -- a luxury for a really good team -- at #13 overall?; and it really just doesn't get any better than the Spurs. The Miami Heat's top second-rounder, Pat Beverley, stopped by and told the story of his circuitous route to the NBA. WPTV Newschannel 5 sports anchor Ryan Lieber also made an appearance.
Thursday (June 25): Why even play the 2009-10 NBA season at this point? Might as well just give the title to LeBron James and the Cavs right now. Seriously, right? Shaq + LeBron = championship, right? Well, there are no more excuses for the LeBron lovers out there; now he has to win a title. But, either way, LeBron is gone. Shaq is going to poison LeBron on Cleveland and the King is going to be out the door, even if they win big this season. Unfortunately, the show takes a turn as news floods in that pop icon Michael Jackson has died. Regardless of anything else in Jackson's troubled life, he was one of the most talented humans ever.
Wednesday (June 24): It's at the point now that Evan just has to laugh at the Mets. Last night's loss featured a rain delay nearly an hour long and the Cardinals' Joel Piniero still threw a complete game shutout. Great. Now Evan's just excited that Fernando Nieve is pitching tonight. The Marlins are winning, the Red Sox are winning and the two New York teams are struggling big time. Elsewhere: How about this Vontae Davis mistaken identity debacle? Before he was drafted, word spread that he had character issues, but -- if this situation really turns out to be mistaken identity -- we still haven't seen any actual issues on or off the field. And the US national soccer team upset Spain: Apparently this is the biggest deal in sports right now and Evan has no perspective.
