Whether or not Ben Roethlisberger sexually assaulted his alleged victim over the weekend is almost irrelevant. Regardless, this isn't looking good for the Steelers' quarterback: The alleged assault victim filed charges immediately, went to the hospital immediately, and may not have known who Roethlisberger is (so not a money-grab), leading one to believe that Roethlisberger certainly did something wrong. Roethlisberger needs to grow up already. A $100 million quarterback cannot be hanging around in dive bars and local clubs in the middle-of-nowhere, all while sending his boys out to collect women. At this point the Steeler fan cannot plan on Roethlisberger being the team's quarterback next season; they can hope he'll be there, but not plan on it.
Broadcasting LIVE from The Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, we started up in unprecedented fashion: Venerable Palm Beach Post columnist Greg Stoda crashed the show and stuck around for nearly an hour, covering topics such as when Evan is going to get married, John's potential as a regular host 3p-6p... as well as some golf and Miami Heat. In non-Stoda-related news, Evan is astounded that the Jets were able to pull off a move for Antonio Cromartie. During the show, news broke that Ben Roethlisberger was again accused of some kind of sexual misconduct; the news spread very quickly to various media outlets, but ESPN.com would not run the story, confusing Evan. Finally, Palm Beach Post Florida Gators reporter Ben Volin stopped by on-site while covering the Honda Classic to discuss some Gators football and that Tebow guy.
So Steve Williams says he didn't know about all of Tiger Woods' off-the-field transgressions? Sure he didn't. There's no way you're that close to someone -- being considered a guy's best friend and being the best man at his wedding -- without at least having some kind of idea that Tiger was cheating on his wife. If anything, it's probably a lot like the situation Tony La Russa had going on while managing Mark McGwire: Sure, maybe La Russa didn't actually see anything specific with his own eyes, but it's a good bet that La Russa had some idea that McGwire was doing something below-board. Elsewhere: Miami Heat team president Pat Riley also joined the show.
So, how much did Sunday's Olympic hockey gold medal game really help the NHL? Evan's still not sure that the single stand-alone game is going to change the sports-watching habits of non-hockey fans. But NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman joined the show with some evidence to the contrary, such as the fact that the ratings for Monday night's game between the Avalanche and Red Wings saw a 100% ratings increase on Versus. J-Mart also pointed out that U.S. Olympic hero Ryan Miller of the Sabres was given a monstrous ovation on the road in Pittsburgh -- a larger ovation than was given to Canadian Olympic hero and home-ice star Sidney Crosby. Elsewhere: Former Florida State Seminoles safety Myron Rolle offered a look at his ongoing preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft.
What is Erin Andrews doing? After the fallout from peephole-gate, we thought Andrews wanted to remove the spotlight from Erin Andrews the symbol and refocus the attention on Erin Andrews the sideline reporter. Now, by joining the cast of "Dancing With The Stars," Andrews is throwing all of the attention back on herself as the individual -- as a sex symbol, perhaps. To be clear, Andrews has every right to do whatever she wants to do and she's allowed to further her career however she can, but let's hope she understands exactly what she's getting herself into.
Sporting events like Olympic hockey are the one-night stands of sports: They're one and done. After it's over, it's completely over. What we saw in Olympic hockey gold medal game was tremendous theater, it featured as amazing a game-tying goal as you'll ever see and it ended in perfectly fitting fashion. But as great as the gold medal game was, that's how disappointing it becomes: This is not the start of something great for hockey in the United States, but rather the pinnacle and everything else is down-hill from here. And by the way, Sidney Crosby is the anti-LeBron: Praise piled high from an early age, but Crosby actually backs it up and performs.
