Number 8- Cicio saves the day
Over the past few years, the Benjamin lacrosse program has transformed into one of the area's top teams, winning back-to-back club state championships in 2010 and 2011. Despite the success, The Buccaneers' wins came with a caveat, as since they played in the club division, they had to hear about not having to face top FHSAA opponents like St. Andrew's and Lake Highland Prep.
But with all of the club teams moving to the FHSAA this past season, Benjamin would have their chance to prove themselves amongst the state's elite. In their first test, the Buccaneers fell to St. Andrew's in the season opener. On March 31st, Benjamin had their chance for redemption against defending state champion Lake Highland Prep.
On senior night, the Buccaneers stormed out of the gate, jumping to an early 3-0 lead, before eventually taking a 6-4 halftime advantage on the Highlanders. Benjamin, determined to pull off a signature win, continued their strong play in the second half, holding a 9-8 lead with under a minute to play.
With 45 seconds to play, Lake Highland Prep mounted a late charge on the Bucs. After a successful clear, the Highlanders had a golden opportunity in transition. After a couple of quick passes, Austin Tamayo found himself a foot away from the cage with a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie, Anthony Cicio. With a clear shot at the goal, Tamayo aimed low, but Cicio pulled off a highlight reel save, deflecting the ball away from the net.
Thanks in part to Cicio's heroics, the Buccaneers would go on to secure the 9-8 victory against Lake Highland Prep, securing one of the biggest wins in program history.
