Palm Beach Gardens hires Rob Freeman as new head football coach

Feb 21, 2012 -- 4:32pm

By Wells Dusenbury

Palm Beach Gardens didn't have to go far in finding its new head football coach. Today, the school hired defensive coordinator Rob Freeman, replacing Chris Davis, who resigned two weeks ago.

"I'm humbled that they decided to go with me," Freeman said.

Freeman has served as an assistant coach at Palm Beach Gardens for 12 seasons, including the past three as Davis' defensive coordinator. Freeman first got his start with the school back in 1999 as an assistant under then head coach Tim Tharp. He later served as the offensive coordinator during the Gators' State Championship season in 2005 under Kevin Fleury.

The following year, Freeman took a coaching job in Georgia for the 2006 season, but returned to Palm Beach Gardens after just one year away and has been there ever since.

"It's home," Freeman said.

Freeman, who also served as an assistant at Santaluces and Palm Beach Lakes before joining the Gators program, said he never had the desire to take over as a head coach until recently.

"It was never anything I really aspired to early at Gardens."

"In recent days, I thought it was maybe time to go ahead and take the reigns of leadership. I've been ready to do it for a long time, but I had to be committed to taking on the task and now I am."

Freeman's work at Palm Beach Gardens clearly made an impression on his former boss. When Davis resigned as the Gators head coach, he recommended that the school hire Freeman as his replacement.

"He's a great choice," Davis said. "He has a ton of integrity and will do a fantastic job."

"The program is in good hands."
