Thank me later

May 07, 2008 -- 9:47am

Since your esteemed morning hosts on ESPN Radio couldn’t be bothered to mention it, I’ll take the initiative and make everyone aware of….

Gavin Floyd.

Since he plays in Chicago, for the White Sox, no one that’s not an update anchor on this station will mention it, until maybe Evan this afternoon, so I’ll take the reins and be the only media member in South Florida to talk about his performance last night.

Against the Twins last night on the South Side, Floyd came two outs away from a no-hitter. It’s the 2nd time in a month that the righty has flirted with a no-hitter (4/12 vs. Detroit, 7 1/3, 1 hit), and the 4 strikeout outing helped end the Sox’s six-game losing streak. Floyd’s now 2-1, has five quality starts this season, and his ERA is down to 2.50.

The White Sox pulled to within a game of first place in the A.L. Central.

I just figured I’d let you know since, well, no one else will be bothered to mention it.

P.S. Thanks for arm, Philadelphia.

Oh, by the way, did you hear Ozzie Guillen was saying curse words while talking to reporters on Sunday? And there were blowup dolls in the clubhouse?

I don’t think I heard enough about that. I would like to have more of my time wasted.

A blog on blogs

May 05, 2008 -- 4:03am

I had a nearly three-page diatribe ready to go about my thoughts on the Buzz Bissinger-Will Leitch debacle on Bob Costas' HBO show last week.

I won't post that, however. After pouring over blogs over the past few days, I've decided that I can't really add anything intelligent that hasn't been said already by blogs with far more readers than my small, silly, non-independent rag. I will, though, go with a two-page edition of ramblings.

If you haven't seen the clip, head over to the wonderful “Awful Announcing” blog. It's on the third page or later at this point. If you don't care about the spat, just watch it to hear Bob Costas say funny words.

Here's the one thing that I have to say. Buzz Bissinger is everything that is wrong with sports media.

It's incessant blowhards like Bissinger who feel they should be heralded because they get to hob-knob with highly-paid athletes and big-name coaches.

It's raging egomaniacs like Bissinger who think their opinion is more important than yours because you don't have a job in the media.

Buzz Bissinger has made a career out of developing books for the sole purpose of being turned into screenplays. He cares about one person, that's himself. “Friday Night Lights” was good, Buzz. Thanks. Now go away.

It's become trendy for members of the “sports media”, who claim to have the fans best interests in mind, to completely discredit blogs and rip them to shreds.

Two of our very own at ESPN, Colin Cowherd and Michelle Tafoya, openly hate blogs. Cowherd didn't appreciate a posting about him last year on “The Big Lead”, and told his listeners to log on to the site and purposely collapse it's server. The site went down for days.

Tafoya, last week, described “Deadspin” as disgusting.

It's people like Cowherd and Tafoya that don't give any of you, well, any credit.

Their livelihoods depend on you tuning into what they do, and once they get their opinions off their chests, you're not allowed to have one.

Blogs don't have to inform. You don't have to throw out mind-numbingly dull numbers or tedious tid-bits to post a good blog. The thought that only informative blogs are legitimate is assanine and ridiculous.

Anyone, with enough research, can put together a blog full of information that will teach you something. And that's great! “True Hoop” is an UNBELIEVABLY informative blog. If you like basketball, this is the holy grail. What's even more amazing is that it was even better as an independent blog before it was cheapened following ESPN pulling author Henry Abbott into into the Worldwide Leader abyss.

I, on the other side, prefer to be entertained. I love creative writing. Some of my favorite blogs are straight up crude, don't have one bit of pertinent information in them, but I don't care because the writing is incredible. “Kissing Suzy Kolber” is a perfect example of that, and also happens to be my favorite blog. Some of the best writing out there today comes via the internet, from independent sources.

I'm hard-pressed to believe that anyone that has read this blog has every learned anything, but I'm sure you've been able to discern my opinion on the subject that I'm writing about. I get the opportunity to express my opinion via the internet because I'm lucky enough to be employed by this station. This doesn't mean, however, that you can't make your opinions public if you aren't employed by a media outlet.

Bissinger, Cowherd, and Tafoya want you to think your opinion doesn't matter. Because you don't work for a media organization, you shouldn't be allowed to put your opinions into writing, or pictures, or video, or podcasts. You shouldn't be allowed to take creative liberties with your thoughts on sports.

I've been a member of “sports media” for a year-and-a-half now. It doesn't make me better than any one of you who listen to our station or visit this website. It doesn't make me some sort of authority on sports. I give an opinion, you either agree or disagree, we debate, and we move on.

The same goes for Evan Cohen, Steve Politziner, Mike Goldstein, Jim Rutledge, Jason Pugh, John Martin, or anyone else that you might hear giving an opinion on our station, newspaper writers included.

The media “old school” is infuriating. The crusty, crabby, know-it-all, coach and player ass kissers who firmly believe they are God's gift. The abhorrent arrogance. Unfortunately, it exists in every market in the country.

The “you don't work for the sports media, you have no idea what you're talking about” argument is the same as the “you never played (insert sport here), you don't know what you're talking about” argument that TV and radio analysts constantly use to make themselves feel smart.

In the clip from Costas' show, Bissinger shows these traits in a disgusting way. His behavior is nothing short of vile, vulgar, and immature. This is a guy who could care less about anyone else's opinion, especially yours.

Blogging is important, accessible, and revolutionary. I like to think that the media “old school” rips blogging because they feel threatened. The common person can make their thoughts public, and it drives the “old school” absolutely insane.

And you know what?

Seeing them squirm couldn't make me any happier.

Blog away. The money that you pump into your favorite teams ensures that professional and college sports in this country can exist. Such investments warrant the right to speak your mind.

Scamrocks

Old. Slow. In trouble.

Even if they get past the Hawks, can they get past LeBron? Don't count on it.

LeBron >Joe Johnson

And Joe Johnson is dominating this team.

All that the Celtics, primarly the Big Three, have talked about all season is the desire and passion to win.

Does anyone want to put a body into Johnson? Knock him to the floor?

Actually, let's start with grabbing a rebound, in particular a defensive rebound, in the final 5 minutes.

The Atlanta Hawks are outclassing the most veteran savvy lineup in basketball.

Scared yet, Celts fans?

You should be.

patriots part deux, ripping boston, new york fans cant taunt, only fans of significant teams can taunt

Draft Day VIII

Apr 26, 2008 -- 5:11pm

The Panthers have traded to get the 19th pick from the Eagles. That likely gives the Eagles another second round pick...since Carolina has picked twice in the first round. An attempt at Jason Taylor coming? We'll see...

Is that blonde woman they keep showing behind Chad Henne his mom or girlfriend?

Also, it's a little irritating that the trades aren't being reported as the picks are being made. We have to wait for them. This draft seems a little chaotic. I don't know if it's beause of the shorter time between picks, or what the deal is, but it doesn't feel the same.

Draft Day VII

Apr 26, 2008 -- 3:55pm

The Jaguars just traded up 18 spots to take the 8th pick from the Ravens. What does this mean for the Dolphins? It sort of the depends on who the Jaguars pick. Here comes Roger Goodell to tell us...

The Jags take Derrick Harvey, the DE out of Florida. The first Gator taken in the draft.

Does this mean that the Jaguars have taken themselves out of the Jason Taylor sweepstakes? I would lean towards yes on that one, despite the fact that I'm pretty sure the Jags retained their 2nd round pick in the trade. But two defensive ends in one day headed to Jacksonville doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Time to look Tampa's way?

Draft Day VI

Apr 26, 2008 -- 3:30pm

JMP made a good point after the Raiders took Darren McFadden. If the Chiefs go with Ryan Clady out of Boise State, the Patriots will get either Vernon Gholston or Glenn Dorsey. How ridiculous is that? The Pats just kepp reloading, keep picking in the top 10, and it's crazy.

Well, Dorsey is actually going to Kansas City now. The Chiefs have 13 picks in this draft, make it 12 now, so don't count them out to start dealing.

Does Gholston go to the Jets now?

Still nothing doing, at least here in Davie, from what we know, on the JT trade front.

Glenn Dorsey just told us he's "happy as all outdoors". I don't have a clue what that means, but I sort of like it.
